The tutorial helps to show you how to install Kali Linux on USB. Kali Linux is an operating system used for penetration testing and similar stuff. It used to be Backtrack and further evolved into Red hat and then into Kali Linux. Kali Linux has a newer version Kali Linux 2.0.

How to Install Kali Linux on USB –

Many people have been thinking why to install Kali Linux on USB instead of installing on a hard drive or an solid state drive? The main reason is we want to create a non-destructive operating system in a portable mode. The only way to obtain these features is to install it on a USB drive.

Things you need to install Kali Linux on USB –

  1. A verified ISO image of latest or previous Kali Linux image files. Download the latest Kali Linux ISO files from link below

  2. If the operating system you use is Windows, you must download Win32 Disk Imager Utility from he link below

    For Linux and OS X operating systems, we can use dd command which comes pre-installed for both Linux and OS X.
  3. You need a pen drive or a USB stick equal to larger than 4 GB. Many laptops have an Card reader slot and even a memory card in that place can be used as a pen drive.

Steps to Install Kali Linux on USB –

  1. Take your pen drive and plug it to the laptop. Make sure you have nothing important in your pen drive as installing Kali Linux on USB will clear all the data on the pen drive.

2. Launch the Win32 Disk Imager Utility you have downloaded. Install the software and open it. It will ask to choose your image file.

3. Select the browse button and select the downloaded ISO file of Kali Linux. Here I have downloaded the lite version.

4. To your far right, you can select the device where the Kali Linux has to be installed. Select the location of USB drive.

5. Once everything is correct, just press Write and wait until the complete operation is complete.

6. Once the operation is complete, eject the pen drive from the laptop or PC and from now, you are good to use your Kali Linux from your USB stick.

This process is only for any version of Windows – Windows XP, Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1 and Windows 10.

Steps to Install Kali Linux on USB from Linux –

Linux is an open source operating system. It is very special as it is used by many developers and programmers. There are many different distributions in Linux.

  1. First, you will need to know where the Kali Linux image file has to be inserted.
  2. Fire up the terminal and execute the following command
    sudo fdisk -l
  3. It will show up all the local drives available with its sizes.
  4. For the second time, execute the same command again and it will also show the pen drive capacity. If the pen drive is 16 GB, it may show only 15.34 GB or something like that.
  5. Go to the current working directory where Kali Linux is available and execute the following command
    ” dd if=kali-linux-2016.2-amd64.iso of=/dev/sdb bs=512k “
  6. It will take more than copying time. Be patient until the complete operation is done.
  7. Once everything is perfect, the USB stick is filled with Kali Linux and you are good to use your Kali Linux from your USB stick.

 

Steps to Install Kali Linux on USB from OS X –

 

Mac OS X is a very unique operating system. Once you get habituated to use that OS, you will never leave that. It may seem difficult to create a bootable USB stick of Kali Linux from your Mac OS X, but it is very easy and almost same as Linux installation.

  1. First, you will need to know where the Kali Linux image file has to be inserted.
  2. Fire up the terminal and execute the following command
    “diskutil list”
  3. It will show up all the local drives available with its sizes.
  4. For the second time, execute the same command again and it will also show the pen drive capacity. If the pen drive is 16 GB, it may show only 15.34 GB or something like that.
  5. Go to the current working directory where Kali Linux is available and execute the following command. Let the USB stick is on disk 5.
  6. Use the following command –
    ” diskutil unmount /dev/disk5
    sudo dd if=kali-linux-2016.2-amd64.iso of=/dev/disk5 bs=1m “
  7. It will take more than copying time. Be patient until the complete operation is done.
  8. Once everything is perfect, the USB stick is filled with Kali Linux and you are good to use your Kali Linux from your USB stick.
